Sources & Further Reading

The books, papers, lectures and explainers this book stands on — and where to go next.

If you read only three more things

Gentle, generous, and free — the best next steps after this book.

A long, careful set of notes that goes all the way to sheaf cohomology.
  • Mod Two Homology and Cohomology — Jean-Claude Hausmann (Springer Universitext)
Develops the whole theory with ℤ/2 coefficients — and argues convincingly that this is the best way to start.

Cohomology in the wild

Impossible figures, rankings, sheaves — cohomology as the measure of local-to-global failure.

Knots and links

For Chapter 3.7: from colourings and braids to Khovanov homology.

Built with SvelteKit, three.js and custom GLSL shaders, and KaTeX (all mathematics is typeset when the site is built). Type is set in Cinzel, Cormorant Garamond, Source Serif 4 and Inter. Every homology group, barcode and decomposition shown in an interactive figure is computed live by a small, tested engine written for this book.

The portraits in the history boxes are drawings made with an image model from historical portraits, most of them from the MacTutor History of Mathematics archive. They are likenesses, not photographs; for Pythagoras and Liu Hui no authentic likeness survives, and their drawings follow later imagined ones. Each name under a portrait links to a biography.
